Web system
Feira de Talentos - Pontuação
A web scoring system for the Talent Fair: administrators set the criteria, teachers mark students’ points throughout the year, and everyone follows progress in charts.
Overview
The Talent Fair is a church project, and I built this system as a volunteer. It tracks students’ participation throughout the year, and each kind of participation is worth points. The system organises that scoring by class: the administrator creates the classes and criteria and invites the teachers, and each teacher registers their students and marks their points week by week.
Every role has its own dashboard. Teachers see their class’s and each student’s progress in charts, the administrator follows teachers and students across every class, and the evaluator scores the teachers.
Technical decisions
Scoring is a mark per day
Each criterion has a point value and a weekday on which it is filled in: Saturday, Wednesday or Sunday. The scoring screen shows only those days across the year, and the teacher marks the days a student met the criterion. Every click is saved immediately. Totals, monthly averages and the year’s running total are all calculated from those marks.
What it cost: no total is stored in the database. The numbers are recalculated every time a dashboard opens, and the administrator dashboard has to read every student’s scores to draw its charts.
Invite-only sign-up, with a username instead of an e-mail
Nobody creates an account on their own. The administrator invites a teacher by username and assigns their class, and sign-up is only accepted for an invited username. Login uses a username and a password: since Firebase Authentication requires an e-mail, the system derives an internal e-mail from the username.
What it cost: without a real e-mail there is no password reset by e-mail. When someone forgets their password, it goes through the administrator.
Students and teachers share one scoring table
The evaluator scores teachers with the same model used for students: criteria with a value, fill-in days and marks saved per year. The screen, the monthly calculation and the charts serve both.
What it cost: both kinds of scoring are tied to the same format. A change to how students are scored also reaches the teachers’ evaluation.
Results and lessons
The system is in use at the church. Administrators can now follow both students’ and teachers’ scores in one place, and each teacher and evaluator works from their own dashboard.
